The United States Postal Service (USPS) has unveiled ambitious sustainability targets for the fiscal year 2030.

In its latest initiative, titled "Delivering for America," USPS aims to significantly enhance sustainability measures throughout its daily operations and network. Central to this plan is a concerted effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and waste, aligning with broader environmental stewardship goals.

The USPS intends to implement changes in packaging and operational strategies to achieve these targets. This includes a focus on increasing the recycled content of packaging to 74% and enhancing package recyclability to 88%, while also diverting 75% of waste from landfills.

Moreover, the agency is committed to optimising its regional and local network transportation, with the aim of reducing associated costs by at least $2.5 billion. Strategies include consolidating volume in fewer facilities, streamlining mail and package transportation to eliminate unnecessary trips, and minimising reliance on air transportation.

To further drive cost reductions, USPS plans to bring previously outsourced operations in-house, consolidate operations into more efficient facilities, modernise existing infrastructure, refine operating plans and schedules, expand sorting capabilities, and enhance asset utilisation.

Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer, Louis DeJoy, said: Our customers and partners expect the Postal Service to be efficient and environmentally responsible and I’m proud that our leadership team has developed meaningful sustainability goals and aligned them with our operational efficiency, service improvement and revenue growth initiatives. These new targets help advance our commitment to being the greenest way for customers to mail and ship across the country.

Through these comprehensive measures, USPS underscores its dedication to sustainability, cost efficiency, and operational excellence as it looks ahead to the challenges and opportunities of the next decade.
