Paper recycling survey reveals US consumers strong belief in its value
Sustainability
According to recent research conducted by the Paper & Packaging Board (P+PB), the majority (66%) of U.S. adults believe recycling paper is valuable, with 60% finding it easy. P+PB encourages consumers to make the most of the holiday season by recycling and reusing paper products.
In a May 2023 study of nearly 2,400 adults, only 14% found recycling paper and cardboard to be burdensome or confusing, highlighting widespread acceptance of recycling. While recycling is more embraced, P+PB recognises the need for periodic reminders about best practices and what is recyclable.
The holiday season, marked by gatherings and gift exchanges, provides an ideal opportunity to further promote recycling habits. P+PB offers a guide, "Celebrate the Holidays Sustainably with Paper," featuring practical tips for recycling and reusing paper-based products.
Mary Anne Hansan, president, P+PB, said: Our research shows that consumers understand the value of recycling paper. The holidays are a very paper intense season, so we wanted to capture and grow their interest with practical and fun ways to make the holidays more earth friendly. Since paper and paper packaging can be recycled up to seven times and are sourced from trees—a renewable resource, the abundance of paper during the holidays makes it a great time to build better recycling habits for families.
To encourage year-round recycling, consumers should consult local guidelines, as acceptance criteria can vary by location and change regularly.
