Pawniolo Pets and TIPA: Packaging that gives back to the land

Pawniolo Pets and TIPA Packaging that gives back to the land

For Pawniolo Pets, sustainability has never been just a marketing initiative, it is the foundation of the business. Every pet treat is produced from locally sourced Hawaiian cattle byproducts, following a philosophy that ensures nothing goes to waste. When it came to packaging, however, finding a solution that matched those same values became challenging.

After years of searching, Pawniolo Pets partnered with TIPA Compostable Packaging and WildKind Packaging to develop a fully home-compostable pouch that protects product quality while supporting the company’s commitment to caring for the land. The collaboration earned international recognition, receiving Second Place in the Sustainable Design category at the 2026 DIELINE Awards, demonstrating that sustainable packaging can deliver exceptional performance, premium design, and meaningful environmental impact.

Founded by third-generation Hawaiian cattle rancher Nick Vericella, Pawniolo Pets was built around a simple philosophy: use every available resource responsibly and create premium pet treats without unnecessary waste. The company’s name itself reflects this heritage, combining “paw” with Paniolo, Hawaii’s historic cowboy culture.

That same respect for the land extends beyond the product itself.

Operating from Hawaii presents unique challenges. Commercial composting infrastructure is limited, making home compostability an essential requirement rather than a nice-to-have. Conventional plastic packaging conflicted with the company’s environmental values, while many alternative packaging solutions required production volumes that were simply unrealistic for a growing specialty brand.

Pawniolo Pets needed packaging that could preserve the freshness of dehydrated pet treats shipped across the United States while remaining true to the company’s commitment to zero waste. Finding that balance required the right partners.

Working together, WildKind Packaging and TIPA developed a fully home-compostable flexible pouch using TIPA’s proprietary bio-based films. The solution delivered the moisture and oxygen barrier required to maintain product quality and shelf life while naturally breaking down in home compost without leaving microplastics or toxic residues behind.

The packaging also became an extension of the Pawniolo brand itself.

TIPA’s films allowed the package to tell the company’s story through Hawaiian-inspired design elements created with Patino Graphic Designs. The signature palaka pattern, references to Hawaii’s ranching heritage, and the phrase “Aloha ʻĀina Always”, meaning love of the land, reinforce the values behind every product and every packaging decision.

For Pawniolo Pets, packaging is not simply a container. It is part of the brands values and customer experience and a visible expression of the company’s commitment to protecting Hawaii’s natural environment.

Today, Pawniolo Pets ships premium pet treats nationwide in packaging that reflects its mission from start to finish. The award-winning collaboration proves that businesses do not have to choose between functionality, premium branding, and environmental responsibility.

For TIPA, projects like Pawniolo Pets represent exactly what compostable packaging was designed to achieve: revolutionizing how brands protect both their products and the places they care about most.
