Amazon: first U.S. automated fulfillment centre ditches plastic delivery packaging
Sustainability
Amazon has made a significant announcement regarding its efforts to enhance sustainability.
The company revealed that its highly automated Amazon fulfillment centre in Euclid, Ohio, has become the first in the United States to replace plastic delivery packaging with curbside-recyclable paper packaging solutions.
This marks a notable shift in Amazon's approach to packaging, which has traditionally incorporated a mix of plastic and paper to optimise factors like durability, weight, and size.
This initiative aims to make it more convenient for customers to recycle at home, eliminating the need to visit drop-off locations.
Key solutions include transitioning from plastic air pillows to paper filler, redesigning machines for paper bag production, and creating new machines for protective, made-to-fit corrugate packaging.
This move is part of a broader, multiyear effort by Amazon to transition its U.S. fulfillment centres to paper-based packaging solutions.
Pat Lindner, VP of Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging at Amazon, said: This is a major milestone for our U.S. fulfillment centres, and I’m incredibly proud of the teams that developed new technologies to eliminate plastic packaging. This is just the beginning, as we continue to discover more ways to eliminate and reduce plastic packaging for our customers.
