Ronseal Moves to Refill Pouches for Fence Stain in UK Retail Market
Sustainability

Ronseal, owned by global paints and coatings manufacturer Sherwin-Williams, has introduced a new packaging format for its concentrated fence stain, replacing traditional plastic tubs with a more sustainable alternative.

The transition is part of a collaboration with Mondi, a global supplier of paper and packaging solutions, to develop the re/cycle SpoutedPouch as a refill option for UK consumers.

The new 950ml spouted pouch is designed as a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to 5-litre pre-mixed paint containers. Consumers can reuse existing tubs to mix the concentrate with water before applying the stain, with clear instructions printed on the pouch for guidance. The packaging is made from a polyethylene mono-material, ensuring it is recyclable while maintaining product protection.

Mondi adapted the pouch specifically for Ronseal’s needs, incorporating a wider spout to improve pourability and make it easier to mix. The resealable closure allows users to store any leftover product securely. The lightweight design not only reduces plastic waste but also minimises space required for storage and transportation. Compared to traditional paint tins, the condensed format enables 230% more units per pallet, improving logistics efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

Christina Rowe, Head of Product Marketing at Sherwin-Williams, said: It’s more convenient for consumers to carry home and the leftovers are easily stored. It will also increase transport efficiency thanks to the reduced weight and size of the packaging. By selling concentrate in spouted pouches rather than premixed fence stain in rigid tubs, we’ve reduced plastic usage by up to 90%.

The Ronseal refill pouches are now available online, in DIY stores, and through UK retailers. The initiative reflects an ongoing effort to develop more sustainable paint packaging, aligning with broader industry goals to reduce plastic waste and improve packaging efficiency.
