Paper-based stand-up pouches for dishwasher tablets launch in Spain and Portugal

Sustainability

Mondi, an international packaging and paper producer, has partnered with Proquimia, a provider of professional cleaning products, to introduce paper-based stand-up pouches for dishwashing tablets in Spain and Portugal.

According to Mondi's internal analysis, the new packaging solution demonstrates a notable reduction in CO2 emissions from production to delivery when compared with the previous plastic-based alternative.

The stand-up pouches, which hold 20 water-soluble dishwashing tablets, are manufactured using Mondi's re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Paper 95/5. This innovation replaces the plastic packaging previously in use with a paper-based design that meets recycling standards in Spain and Portugal.

With a paper content of over 85%, including the zipper, the pouches can be disposed of through the paper recycling streams available in both countries. This development is part of Mondi's broader re/cycle portfolio, aimed at creating more sustainable packaging options.

The production process takes place entirely within Mondi's facilities. It begins with kraft paper made from responsibly sourced fibres, which is then coated to provide the necessary protective barrier for the dishwashing tablets. The material is subsequently printed, cut, and converted into the finished pouches, ready for filling and sealing.

Alessandro D’Agostino, Business Development Manager for Home & Personal Care at Mondi, said: Consumers across Europe are switching to household brands that have adopted a more sustainable packaging solution. By closely collaborating with our customers, we aim to balance resource efficiency with the lowest possible environmental impact, meeting the demands of our customers and their end-consumers alike. In line with our MAP2030 commitments, Mondi is actively working towards creating packaging solutions that keep valuable raw materials in circulation.
Cristina Arola Vilella, Packaging Manager at Proquimia, said: The long-term aim is to introduce recyclable packaging throughout our entire portfolio and Mondi is the ideal partner to help us do this, while maintaining the high standards of quality that our customers and end users expect. This collaboration strengthens Proquimia's commitment to sustainability, a value we have upheld since our beginning: we’re really looking forward to developing our working relationship with Mondi.

The collaboration between Mondi and Proquimia reflects a shared commitment to reducing environmental impact by adopting more recyclable and resource-efficient packaging solutions.
