Mondi has released its sixth annual eCommerce trend report, examining consumer attitudes towards online shopping and the role of packaging in shaping brand perception.

Titled “Sustainability and its impact on packaging and online shopping choices”, the report gathers insights from around 6,000 consumers across Czechia, France, Germany, Poland, Sweden, and Türkiye, based on survey data collected in late 2024.

The findings highlight key trends in eCommerce packaging preferences. Online shopping continues to grow, with 71% of consumers now making purchases at least once a month, compared to 56% the previous year. While spending remains steady, packaging expectations are evolving. Protective packaging remains a priority for 95% of consumers, and 80% want sustainable or recyclable options.

Packaging design plays a crucial role in customer retention, with 59% stating it influences repeat purchases. The impact is even stronger among Gen Z shoppers, 71% of whom value aesthetically pleasing and recyclable packaging. However, only half of consumers trust brands’ sustainability claims, underlining the need for transparency.

The report also suggests that sustainable packaging enhances brand perception, with 90% of respondents favouring companies that use recyclable, right-sized eCommerce packaging.

Armand Schoonbrood, Mondi Group eCommerce COO, said: This year’s findings confirm that sustainability is no longer just a trend, it’s a business imperative. Consumers are demanding tangible action from retailers to reduce their environmental impact. At Mondi, we are proud to support customers with innovative, sustainable eCommerce packaging and paper solutions that meet consumer expectations and help our partners to build trust, loyalty, and long-term value in the eCommerce space.

The full report provides further insights into shifting consumer expectations, packaging innovations, and sustainability trends shaping the eCommerce sector.
