Aldi introduces trial to cut plastic waste with double toilet rolls
Sustainability
Aldi is launching a trial initiative to combat plastic waste by introducing double toilet rolls, aimed at reducing both plastic usage and the transportation required for distribution.
As part of this trial, the UK's fourth-largest supermarket is doubling the volume of sheets per roll for select own-brand lines, consequently leading to a reduction in packaging size.
If implemented across all its stores, this move has the potential to eliminate over 60 tonnes of plastic packaging annually. Furthermore, by accommodating more packs per truck, Aldi anticipates a decrease in the number of lorry journeys needed for delivery.
Luke Emery, Plastics and Packaging Director at Aldi, said: At Aldi, we’re working hard to reduce our environmental footprint wherever we can, and we’re always looking for new ways to make a difference. Reducing the plastic waste and carbon emissions related to such a widely-used product will have a huge positive impact, and it’s just one example of some exciting changes we have in the pipeline.
The trial is currently underway in the West Midlands, East Midlands, and Yorkshire regions, offering double toilet rolls in pack sizes of four, six, eight, and twelve.
