Jägermeister bottles to be made using low carbon hybrid furnace
Sustainability

Ardagh Glass Packaging-Europe (AGP-Europe), part of Ardagh Group, has confirmed it will begin producing emerald green bottles for long-standing customer Jägermeister using its NextGen hybrid furnace technology — marking a reported world first for this colour and method.

The move extends a glass packaging partnership that has spanned more than 20 years, with both companies now aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of Jägermeister’s signature green glass bottle.

Production will take place at AGP-Europe’s NextGen Furnace in Obernkirchen, Germany, which began operations in late 2023. The furnace features a hybrid design powered by 42 electrodes, allowing it to use up to 80% electric heating. This technology has already demonstrated emissions reductions in the manufacture of amber glass, where the use of 60% renewable electricity and up to 70% recycled content resulted in a 64% reduction in carbon impact compared to conventional production.

The renewable energy used to power the facility is supplied through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Sunnic Lighthouse GmbH, part of ENERPARC AG, in Germany. The companies intend to build on this progress by expanding the same approach to the production of green glass.

Carsten Doliwa, Vice President Procurement at Mast-Jägermeister SE, said: The signing of a contract for up to 14 million 70cl bottles from the NextGen Furnace in Obernkirchen is a milestone in our long-standing partnership with Ardagh Glass Packaging. The production of our green Jägermeister bottles with this new technology aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by an envisaged 64% per bottle which, if achieved, will directly contribute to our sustainability goals.

The project reflects broader industry efforts to decarbonise glass manufacturing by incorporating low-carbon energy sources and higher levels of recycled materials, alongside long-term customer collaboration.
