Metsä Board collaborates with industry experts to develop the 'world's lightest' pizza box.
The creation of this exceptional pizza box involved a collaborative effort by Metsä Board and leading professionals in the field. Together, they aimed to design a food-safe packaging solution that would not only minimise material and printing ink consumption but also have a positive environmental impact, all while ensuring optimal performance, functionality, and print quality. As a result, a remarkably lightweight pizza box with outstanding performance has been achieved, setting a new standard in the industry.
Futupack took charge of the visual design of the pizza box, while Adara Pakkaus handled the manufacturing process. Metsä Board contributed a lightweight paperboard substrate, which serves as a superior, safer, and more sustainable alternative for food-grade applications. This substrate is a fully bleached, uncoated white kraftliner that is compatible with flexo, offset, and digital inkjet printing techniques. It is available in a basis weight range of 70-160 g/m², providing versatility and reliability for various printing needs.
Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director at Metsä Board explains: Compared to traditional solutions, the weight and material consumption of the box have been reduced by approximately 30%. The fresh fibre MetsäBoard Natural WKL Bright used for the box weighs 80 g/m2 (16 lbs/1000ft2). Despite the reduced weight, the E-flute corrugated board box's structure provides the box with the necessary rigidity and the fresh fibre material the necessary purity to carry a freshly baked pizza. All the corrugated board layers are made of the same material, which makes the production logistics efficient too.
