New technology enhances roll-on deodorant ball production
Technology
Berry Global has reportedly confirmed the development of a patented manufacturing technology designed to improve the production of roll-on balls used in deodorant applicators.
The new process is reported to deliver increased production efficiency, producing balls with greater consistency and minimal material waste. A key feature of the innovation lies in its single injection moulding tool, which utilises a specially designed insert to join two halves of the ball prior to over-moulding. This four-step method results in a smoother central seam, significantly reducing the amount of plastic that typically needs to be removed during manufacturing.

According to Berry, the high level of precision offered by this method ensures that each ball meets strict dimensional requirements, which is essential for preventing leaks and ensuring functionality in consumer use.
The 1.4-inch ball—currently the most commonly used size in deodorant products—will be incorporated into Berry’s standard range of roll-on applicators. While the ball itself follows a universal design, Berry’s technical teams collaborate with individual customers to ensure compatibility with specific product formulations and packaging designs.
The balls are produced in polypropylene, a material that is widely recyclable where appropriate collection and recycling systems exist. They can also be manufactured using up to 100% post-consumer recycled content, offering an option that aligns with broader sustainability goals.
