FedEx introduces reusable box system for B2B shipping
Business

FedEx has launched a reusable packaging solution for business-to-business (B2B) shipping, developed in partnership with reusable packaging provider Returnity.

The system features a purpose-designed reusable box intended to enable FedEx customers to transition from single-use corrugated packaging to a reusable alternative within existing supply chains. According to the companies, the format has been developed to integrate with current parcel network operations while avoiding additional handling fees often associated with alternative packaging solutions.

The reusable container has been designed to address common challenges linked to adopting reusable packaging in logistics networks, including cost, operational complexity and compatibility with automation systems. The box is described as durable, collapsible and suitable for use within FedEx’s existing infrastructure.

The solution is aimed at closed-loop B2B environments, such as fulfilment centres, store replenishment operations and internal distribution systems, where packaging can be returned and reused in a controlled manner. Each box is designed for up to 50 shipment cycles and can carry loads of up to 50 pounds.

FedEx stated that the reusable format has the potential to reduce packaging costs by up to 30% per cycle and lower carbon emissions by between 64% and 88% compared with single-use corrugated packaging under typical conditions, based on a return rate of at least 60%.

In collaboration with Returnity, we have created the first scalable, reusable box solution for B2B customers, which is especially useful for our soft-goods shippers. By pairing Returnity’s durable, easy-to-integrate packaging with our global network, we’re helping retailers unlock meaningful cost savings while reducing environmental impact, all without sacrificing speed or reliability. This new solution supports our vision to make supply chains smarter for everyone.

Neil Gibson, senior vice president, global customer experience, FedEx.

The system has been piloted with a number of B2B shippers across North America, where it was tested in applications including store replenishment, internal transfers and reverse logistics operations. According to feedback from the pilot, users reported improvements in unpacking times, labour efficiency, storage organisation and product protection.

The reusable box solution is currently available to FedEx customers in the United States, with plans for expansion into Australia and Europe in the future.
