Kroger introduces RFID labels for fresher groceries and smarter inventory
Technology

Kroger has partnered with Avery Dennison to implement RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology as part of its strategy to enhance inventory management and improve customer and associate experiences. This initiative aims to introduce item-level digital identification, allowing for more accurate and frequent inventory tracking, which in turn maximises product freshness and reduces waste.

The collaboration initially focuses on the bakery section, where RFID-embedded labels will be applied to each item.

This technology will provide Kroger with significant time-saving advantages and access to critical data for automating inventory management and optimising product freshness.

According to Avery Dennison, the integration of these RFID sensors is a strategic step toward improving operational efficiency, reducing spoilage, and creating a better experience for both customers and staff.

Jordan Poff, vice president of retail operations at Kroger, said: Kroger’s customers and associates are at the heart of everything we do. Our work with Avery Dennison will improve inventory visibility, which means products will be on the shelves when our customers want them, while enabling our associates to spend more time with our customers.

Over time, Kroger intends to expand the use of RFID technology to other fresh product categories, ensuring a seamless, efficient, and optimised retail environment.
