United Airlines ditches plastic wine bottles for recyclable cans
Sustainability

United Airlines has introduced a significant shift in its domestic economy cabin by replacing mini plastic wine bottles with canned wines, addressing growing demand for sustainable alternatives.

Beginning this month, passengers will be able to enjoy four wine varieties, each served in 250ml aluminium cans, which are fully recyclable. This transition is expected to eliminate around 4.7 million single-use plastic bottles annually, aligning with United's broader environmental goals.

The switch to canned wine supports United’s commitment to reducing onboard waste. Aluminium is infinitely recyclable, offering an eco-friendly solution to plastic packaging while still maintaining high-quality service. United has specifically chosen to feature wines from women-owned brands Just Enough Wines and Maker Wine as part of this initiative.

In addition to sustainability, the canned wines offer passengers a fresh option, with each can providing the equivalent of a glass and a half. This update reflects a growing trend in consumer preference for canned beverages, and United is positioning itself at the forefront of that movement by enhancing passenger choice while reducing environmental impact.

United’s decision is part of a broader effort to reduce single-use plastics and increase recycling across all operations. The airline has already served more than 20 million glasses of wine globally this year and plans to continue improving its sustainability practices, with the goal of reducing waste in-flight and beyond.
