Tesco introduces paper packaging for Finest pasta range
Sustainability
Tesco has announced a significant packaging change for its Finest dried pasta range, transitioning to 100% recyclable paper packaging. This move is part of the retailer's ongoing efforts to reduce plastic waste, with the shift expected to eliminate over 10 million pieces of plastic annually, equating to more than 30 tonnes.
The updated packaging covers ten product lines, which are available in Tesco stores and Tesco Express locations.
The new paper packs can be disposed of in standard household recycling bins, aligning with Tesco’s environmental goals.
This initiative is part of Tesco’s 4Rs (Remove, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) strategy, launched in 2019. Since then, the company has removed over 2.3 billion pieces of plastic from its UK operations.
Claire Lorains, Tesco Group Sustainability and Quality Director, said: Removing unnecessary plastic is an important way that Tesco can reduce its environmental impact. The new paper packaging works just as well as the old plastic but can be popped into your normal recycling bin with other paper. We're proud of the work we’ve done so far to reduce the plastic we use at Tesco but will continue to look for ways to do more.
Recent efforts under the strategy include removing plastic packaging from own-brand pocket tissue multi-packs, saving over 55 million pieces of soft plastic, and introducing luxury toilet rolls and kitchen towels made from recycled cardboard materials.
These steps reflect Tesco’s commitment to innovative and sustainable packaging solutions.
