Single-use BBQs under fire over packaging waste and recycling concerns
Sustainability
Waste management company Business Waste has launched a campaign calling for a UK-wide ban on disposable BBQs, arguing that the single-use products contribute to waste, litter and environmental damage while posing a fire risk during periods of hot, dry weather.
The company has launched a public petition urging policymakers to prohibit the sale and use of disposable BBQs across the UK. According to Business Waste, while a number of major retailers have already removed the products from sale, they remain available through some retailers and online marketplaces.

Disposable BBQs are commonly used at beaches, parks, campsites and picnic areas due to their convenience and low cost. However, Business Waste argues that the products generate avoidable waste because they are designed for a single use before being discarded.
The company highlighted that disposable BBQs typically contain a combination of metal trays, charcoal, foil, grill mesh, ash and packaging materials, which can be difficult to recycle once contaminated by food residue and use. As a result, many are disposed of as general waste or become litter in public spaces.
Business Waste also pointed to concerns around safe disposal. The company cited guidance from environmental organisations and fire services warning that disposable BBQs can remain hot for extended periods and may be difficult to cool safely before disposal. Improperly discarded BBQs can create burn hazards and, in some cases, contribute to grass and wildfires.
Several UK supermarkets, including Aldi and Waitrose, removed disposable BBQs from sale in 2022 following concerns over wildfire risks and environmental impacts. Aldi stated at the time that the move would eliminate an estimated 35 tonnes of single-use waste packaging from its operations.
Despite these actions, Business Waste believes voluntary retailer measures do not go far enough. The company argues that continued availability through some retail channels creates inconsistency and may undermine wider fire prevention and environmental campaigns.
According to Business Waste, disposable BBQs present three key challenges: the generation of single-use waste, the potential for littering in outdoor locations, and the risk of accidental fires during warmer weather.
Disposable BBQs are wasteful, hard to dispose of safely, and still causing fires across the UK. With reusable alternatives widely available, there is little justification for keeping them on sale. A UK-wide ban would protect green spaces, reduce landfill waste, and make the message much clearer for the public.

The company is advocating for reusable alternatives, which it says offer a more sustainable option for outdoor cooking while reducing waste and environmental impact.
Business Waste said a national ban would provide a clearer and more consistent approach to addressing the environmental and safety concerns associated with disposable BBQs.
