Mondelez introduces new paper-based packaging for snack food market

Sustainability

Saica Group, a prominent company in packaging solutions, has partnered with Mondelez, a multinational confectionery, food, holding, beverage and snack food company, to introduce a new paper-based packaging product for the confectionery, biscuits, and chocolate markets.

This innovative packaging is designed to be recyclable within the paper waste stream and is suitable for heat sealable packing processes.

It can be produced either coated or uncoated, depending on the desired final appearance.

During the development phase, significant attention was given to optimising the conversion and Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) packing processes. The goal was to ensure high print quality, optimal functionality, and ease-of-use for machine-packing lines. The packaging was designed to meet the necessary mechanical and sealing performance standards, ensuring that products reach consumers in perfect condition.

Miguel Angel Dora, General Manager at Saica Flex, said: We believe that packaging sustainability is a very serious challenge that required our full commitment and far-reaching collaborations with companies equally committed, like Mondelez. Our ambition to make Saica’s flexible monomaterial structures, including paper, is a key aspect to achieve all these goals. We hope that, by 2025, 100% of our flexible packaging offer is recyclable so that we can contribute towards a truly circular economy.

The new packaging meets the sustainability standards set by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI).
