Lagos enforces immediate ban on styrofoam and single-use plastics

Sustainability

In a move to combat environmental degradation, the Lagos State Government has imposed an immediate ban on the use and distribution of styrofoam and single-use plastics. The decision, announced by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stems from the severe environmental impact of non-biodegradable styrofoam, which consistently clogs drainage channels despite regular cleaning efforts.

The Commissioner highlighted that major roads and markets grapple with significant litter, primarily composed of styrofoams, emphasising the urgent need for intervention. The ban will be enforced by the State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Kick Against Indiscipline, targeting production companies and distribution outlets. Mr. Wahab underscored the State's legal authority for the ban, citing regulations such as the National Environmental (Sanitation and Waste Control) Regulation 2009 and the 2017 State Environmental Management and Protection Law.

Producers, distributors, and end-users failing to comply with the ban face heavy fines, penalties, and potential premises sealing. The Commissioner warned of additional costs for daily cleanup efforts, which currently amount to millions of naira, attributing the consequences of styrofoam use to climate change, flooding, and diseases like cholera.

Residents and consumers are urged to embrace alternatives by boycotting styrofoam and single-use plastics, adopting reusable food containers and water bottles.

Mr. Wahab stated: Our state cannot be held hostage to the economic interests of a few wealthy business owners compared to the millions of Lagosians suffering the consequences of indiscriminate dumping of single-use plastics and other types of waste.

The State Government aims to instill responsible practices and mitigate the adverse effects of plastic waste on the environment.
