Italian aluminium packaging recycling rate exceeds EU targets in latest CIAL figures
Sustainability
CIAL has published its 2025 recycling data, showing continued performance above current and future European targets for aluminium packaging recovery.
According to the figures, the recycling rate for beverage cans reached 92.8%, aligning with levels typically seen in the most effective deposit return schemes across Europe. Overall, around 65,000 tonnes of aluminium packaging were sent for recycling during the year.

The consortium reports that this level of recycling contributed to the avoidance of more than 460,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions, alongside energy savings estimated at 205,000 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe).
Market volumes also increased, with a reported 7% rise, indicating that Italy’s collection and recycling infrastructure is continuing to manage higher quantities of material while maintaining consistent performance.
The results suggest that Italy has already surpassed both the European Union’s 2025 recycling target of 50% and the 2030 target of 60% for aluminium packaging. CIAL attributes this to the development of a well-established supply chain capable of processing growing volumes while maintaining environmental standards.
The data was presented at the organisation’s annual general meeting, where the system was described as a mature industrial model supporting both increased material flows and ongoing sustainability objectives.
