FIFA bans reusable water bottles from World Cup stadiums

Football fans attending World Cup matches will not be permitted to bring reusable water bottles into stadiums after FIFA updated its Stadium Code of Conduct.

The governing body had previously allowed spectators to carry empty, transparent reusable plastic bottles into venues. However, under revised rules that came into effect this week, reusable bottles are now prohibited.

The updated guidance also bans a range of other containers, including bottles, cups, jars and cans. FIFA said the restrictions are intended to reduce the risk of injury from objects being thrown inside stadiums.

The decision has prompted questions from some supporters regarding access to drinking water, particularly with temperatures at certain venues expected to reach between 26°C and 28°C during the tournament.

Beyond concerns around hydration, the policy has also attracted criticism from sustainability advocates and supporters regarding the potential increase in single-use plastic waste. With reusable bottles no longer permitted inside stadiums, attendees may be more reliant on purchasing bottled water or other drinks on-site, potentially increasing consumption of single-use packaging during the tournament.

In response, FIFA said measures will be in place to help manage conditions for spectators and ensure access to water within stadiums.
