Belgian retailers unite for reusable mushroom packaging trial
Sustainability
Several major Belgian retailers, including Albert Heijn België, ALDI Belgium, Carrefour Belgium, Colruyt Group, Delhaize Belgium, and Lidl Belgium & Luxembourg, are collaborating on a pilot project to reduce packaging waste.
The initiative, led by the Reusable Packaging Coalition with support from Made Design & Innovation and Fost Plus, aims to introduce reusable blue mushroom trays in the Mechelen region by mid-2025.
This project aligns with upcoming European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation requirements, which will ban single-use packaging for fruits and vegetables under 1.5 kilograms by 2030.

The reusable trays will undergo industrial washing and refilling by producers, enabling them to circulate multiple times within the supply chain.
The trial represents a unified effort among Belgian retailers to drive systemic change and meet evolving sustainability goals.
