Aldi trials reduced packaging for fruits and vegetables

Sustainability

Aldi is testing the elimination of pulp trays and punnets from the packaging of several fruit and vegetable lines.

Among the changes, plastic punnets have been removed from Nature’s Pick Cherry Tomatoes in selected stores. This change has already been implemented for Nature’s Pick Sliced Mushrooms and will soon apply to Baby Plum Tomatoes as well.

Additionally, Aldi is eliminating pulp trays from its Nature’s Pick Mango twin pack and Avocado twin pack to reduce packaging waste.

If these trials are expanded nationwide, Aldi could potentially remove over 370 tonnes of plastic and packaging per year, reinforcing its position as the UK's fourth-largest supermarket.

Luke Emery, Plastics and Packaging Director at Aldi, said: At Aldi, we are constantly reviewing ways to reduce excess plastic and packaging, and these trials on a range of our fruit and vegetables are the next steps in helping us achieve our goals. Becoming a more sustainable supermarket is important to not only us, but our customers too, and further reducing packaging is just one of many changes to come.

Recently, Aldi also started testing the removal of plastic packaging from bananas in selected stores across Yorkshire, the South West, the South East, and the Midlands.
