Developed in collaboration with Bio4Life, this produce label helps achieve zero-waste goals, align with compostability policies, and meet food safety standards

TIPA® Compostable Packaging, a global leader in developing and manufacturing compostable flexible packaging solutions, together with Bio4Pack its European subsidiary, has launched a new certified home compostable label for fresh produce suitable for a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Produce stickers are one of the top five most persistent contaminants in compost, prompting a global transition to compostable alternatives driven by both market and regulation trends.

TIPA’s home compostable produce label stands out in the marketplace with excellent resistance to moisture while remaining flexible. It’s pressure-sensitive adhesive allows for strong adherence on a variety of produce ranging from the smooth skin of a banana or mango to the complex, rough skin of an orange or cantaloupe, without leaving a residue on the produce.

Labels on fresh produce have traditionally been made from conventional plastic that cannot be recycled and are often discarded in food waste bins, contaminating organic streams and contributing to microplastic pollution. Policies requiring compostable labels are emerging around the world, and TIPA is leading the way with a solution that will break down with the organic matter it’s attached to without compromising on performance. We’re excited to offer these produce labels as part of our growing portfolio of sustainable solutions that perform like conventional plastics but meet today’s compostability standards.

Daphna Nissenbaum, co-founder and CEO of TIPA.

This development is the result of a partnership between TIPA and Bio4Life, a supplier of home compostable adhesives. Bio4Life adhesive technology, BioTAK, is the world’s first adhesive that is fully certified to European compost standards and leaves no residue.

Features of TIPA’s certified home compostable produce labels include:

  • Compatible with conventional label printing presses
  • Usable with both machine and hand application techniques
  • Certified food-safe for direct food application
  • Durable in cold and moist conditions

TIPA also offers compostable packaging for fresh produce, allowing growers and retailers to improve the sustainability of their packaging. Additionally, the company’s compostable films for labels and packaging can run on existing production lines, enabling a seamless transition for converters and brands.
