TIPA: Alpine Fresh – A bold step toward the future of packaging

TIPA Alpine Fresh A bold step toward the future of packaging
Supplier News

Two years ago, Alpine Fresh, through its brand Hippie Organics, took a bold step that would redefine sustainable packaging in the fresh produce industry. A fully compostable asparagus bag – created in partnership with TIPA Compostable Packaging and PPC Flexible Packaging – earned the prestigious Best Sustainable Packaging award at the IFPA Global Produce & Floral Show. Fast forward to 2025, and this same approach to innovation has now secured Gold and Silver awards from the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA), emphasizing Alpine Fresh’s leadership in sustainable packaging solutions. But this success didn’t happen overnight; it is the result of years of commitment, investment, and an unwavering belief that the path to sustainability is as challenging as it is rewarding.

Founded in 1988 by lifelong friends Jose Sanchez and Walter Yager, Alpine Fresh set out with a simple mission: to connect Latin American growers with U.S. consumers. Over the years, the company has grown into a powerhouse in fresh produce, recognized for its high standards and willingness to embrace innovation. But as their footprint expanded, so did their responsibility to the planet.

Sustainability has been a core pillar of Alpine Fresh’s strategy long before compostable packaging. It invested early in Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) technology with PPC Flexible Packaging to extend shelf life and reduce food waste, proving that sustainability is not about a single solution but a commitment to continuous improvement.

When Alpine Fresh set out to create a compostable alternative to traditional plastic packaging, they knew they needed the right partners.

PPC Flexible Packaging, a trusted collaborator, was with us from the beginning. But it was TIPA’s certified home compostable films that gave us the breakthrough we were looking for. That combination made our vision a reality.

Together, this trio challenged the status quo of produce packaging, proving that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand.

The shift toward sustainable packaging isn’t just about environmental impact; it’s about staying ahead in a rapidly evolving industry.

Retailers aren’t just looking for sustainability—they expect it. Our compostable asparagus bags prove that what’s good for the planet can also be great for business.

Alpine Fresh is paving the way for others, proving that while the journey to sustainability comes with challenges, the rewards – both for the planet and for business – are undeniable. The future of packaging is here, and Alpine Fresh is leading the way.
