Packaging giant International Paper to shut down five UK sites

Business
International Paper has announced plans to close five of its UK packaging sites, a move that could result in the loss of approximately 300 jobs. The decision follows challenging market conditions and forms part of a wider strategic review of its UK operations.
The US-headquartered packaging company, which recently finalised its $7.2 billion acquisition of UK rival DS Smith, confirmed that a formal consultation process is underway with affected employees and trade unions.

In addition to the proposed site closures, the company is considering relocating one site, adjusting operations at another from a seven-day to a five-day shift pattern, and introducing a limited number of job reductions at two further facilities.
While specific site locations have not been disclosed, International Paper stated that the changes are expected to be implemented by the end of 2025, pending the outcome of ongoing consultations.
