Leading UK food retailers opt for self-separating porridge pots to boost recycling
Business
Seven of the UK’s leading food retailers have introduced Greiner Packaging’s K3® r100 self-separating packaging for their private-label instant porridge ranges. Waitrose, Greggs, Morrisons, M&S, Tesco, Lidl, and Asda have all adopted the packaging, which is designed to improve recyclability without requiring consumer intervention.
The K3® r100 packaging automatically separates its cardboard outer wrap from the plastic cup before reaching recycling facilities. This feature ensures accurate sorting through near-infrared detection systems, improving the likelihood that both materials are correctly recycled. This development builds on Greiner Packaging’s K3® design, originally created over 40 years ago to reduce plastic usage while incorporating a tear-tab for manual separation.
The self-separating K3® r100 has gained industry recognition, securing multiple awards, including the Green Packaging Star Award in Austria and a World Star Packaging Award in early 2024. The innovation was also honoured at the Packnorth Awards 2024, where it received the Packnews Special Prize for its contribution to sustainable packaging solutions.

By integrating K3® r100 into their instant porridge packaging, UK retailers are increasing the potential for packaging materials to be effectively recycled while supporting industry efforts to enhance sustainability in food packaging.
