Dispersion adhesives for corrugated cardboard packaging

Corrugated cardboard is the most used packaging material worldwide. The lightweight material is very stable, eco-friendly and can be finished in many ways.

Dispersion adhesives from Jowat are used for laminating the cardboard with high-quality papers during the finishing step. These adhesives provide superior adhesion properties and the ideal processing characteristics for all individual requirements.

Manufacturers' joints of corrugated cardboard boxes are usually bonded. This method provides several benefits compared to stapling and taping: a high degree of automation, reduced downtimes, and an attractive appearance. Jowacoll® dispersion adhesives for this application facilitate a reliable and permanent bond – even at high feed speeds.

Side seam and dot gluing for folding boxes

Used for primary packaging, folding boxes provide additional benefits, and do not only protect the product during transport and storage. Folding boxes are increasingly used as advertising media and communicate brand images and product quality. Therefore, they have become more customised with regard to their function, form and degree of finishing – from embossing, to perforation, printed sheet lamination, and varnish coatings.

Jowat also supplies dispersions from the Jowacoll®product range for longitudinal seams and point gluing of folding boxes. These adhesives are characterised by excellent mechanical processing characteristics and very good adhesion even to demanding, coated or lacquered surfaces.

Adhesives for paper sacks and bags production

Flexible and strong, sacks and bags ensure a safe transport of goods such as free flowing bulk material. To protect the goods from mechanical stress and moisture, this packaging is usually manufactured from a composite material consisting of several layers of paper and plastic foils, paper and paper, or paper and aluminium foils. Special Jowacoll® dispersion adhesives used in manufacturing ensure, for instance, a fibre-free separation of the paper-plastic compound. In addition, the adhesives are characterised by superior feed properties, are easy to clean, provide a reliable, permanent adhesion to the different substrates, and meet the demands of food contact regulations.

The bonding operation to close small bags filled with free-flowing, dry bulk material such as coffee, sugar, or flour on mandrel wheel packaging units presents a big challenge. Adhesives used in this application are adapted to increasing line speeds and adhere to different surfaces – from the basic paper of sugar bags to the premium finish of coffee bags. Jowacoll® dispersions impress with optimum setting properties, a good and permanent adhesion, as well as best mechanical processing characteristics.

Dispersion adhesives for film to print lamination

Highly refined folding boxes, book covers and other printing products set new standards in quality and appearance. Print finishers have a wide variety of possibilities for upgrading a product. One established and effective procedure is the film to print lamination of printed sheets with matt, glossy, structured, or special effects films. This results in enhanced printed surfaces of a superior quality. The quality of the lamination depends on several factors. The application method, the materials to be bonded, and the adhesive all have a decisive impact on the laminate quality and consequently also on the appearance and value of the entire print product. For many years, solvent-based adhesives were the product of choice for this application in the past. Increased requirements regarding the environmental compatibility of manufacturing processes and the recycling properties of the substances used imposed the need for a system change in the graphics industry. Alternative systems that facilitate solvent-free laminating became absolutely necessary. In the last years, Jowat has developed and optimised a complete range of water-based adhesives for this application in close cooperation with engineering companies and print finishers.

Products from the Jowacoll® 764.xx product group have been consistently optimised over the last years to improve their performance, for instance mechanical processing characteristics, cutting resistance, coating weight, gloss, and resistance to mechanical stress, e.g. due to embossing or fold burning. In addition, the new product generation also includes several adhesives that are approved for food contact. Which of the modern laminating adhesives is the best fit for an application depends on the machine type and the application method used, as well as on the specific requirements. However, the adhesive choice can also be influenced by what type of paper or film is to be bonded and by whether it has been printed conventionally or digitally.
