Walmart to reduce packaging waste with paper mailers and rightsized boxes
Sustainability
In an effort to tackle packaging waste associated with online orders, Walmart has announced plans to make significant changes to its packaging practices.
The retail giant intends to replace the majority of plastic mailers with paper mailers and adopt a "rightsize" approach to cardboard box packaging.
By transitioning to paper mailers, Walmart aims to eliminate approximately 65 million plastic mailers, equivalent to over 2,000 tons of plastic, in the United States by the end of its fiscal year.
Additionally, the company is implementing technology in half of its fulfilment network to create custom-fitted packages for each order. This approach can reduce the need for filler materials by 60% and result in up to 26% less waste, according to Walmart.
As part of these changes, Walmart will also offer customers the option to consolidate shipping for online orders and opt out of single-use plastic bags when picking up orders placed online. The company plans to make this option available nationwide by the end of the year.
Karisa Sprague, senior vice president, Fulfilment Network Operations, Walmart, said: U.S.Our commitment to regeneration is core to who we are and how we innovate at Walmart. Customers have told us how excited they are about these enhancements to make it easier for them to make more sustainable choices that support the planet and the next generation.
