SSP UK introduces plastic free hot beverage lids
Sustainability

SSP UK, a prominent operator of food and beverage outlets in travel locations, is taking significant steps towards sustainability by replacing plastic lids on its own-brand hot beverage cups with a plastic-free alternative.

The newly introduced lids, crafted from bagasse derived from sugar cane stalks, mark a substantial move to eliminate over eight million single-use plastic items from SSP’s own-brand supply chain annually. This transition will reduce the environmental footprint by more than 45 tonnes, equivalent to the weight of more than three Routemaster buses. To put it into perspective, the current lids laid out end-to-end would span over 792km, surpassing the distance from Aberdeen to Bournemouth.

In addition to their eco-friendly composition, the bagasse lids are also free from PFAS, commonly referred to as “forever chemicals,” which scientific research indicates can pose risks to human health. These lids will be implemented across various SSP brands, including AMT Coffee and Upper Crust.

SSP has previously shifted its own-brand cold drinks cups to rPET, incorporating recycled material, further advancing its commitment to sustainability.

Kari Daniels, CEO SSP UK & Ireland, said: This is a significant step forward in our sustainability journey. Making the move to bagasse lids not only reduces our reliance on plastic but, because the plants can regrow, we are securing the longevity of our supply chain from renewable sources.
