M&S embraces paper packaging for café sandwiches and toasties

Marks & Spencer has implemented a significant eco-friendly change by introducing recyclable paper packaging for its entire range of sandwiches and toasties available in M&S Cafés across the UK.

Starting this month, M&S Café's sandwiches and toasties will be presented in easily recyclable FSC-approved cardboard or paper packaging, reducing plastic usage by 79%. The packaging maintains product visibility through a small window while ensuring recyclability in the paper waste stream.

With over 300 M&S Cafés nationwide, this initiative is anticipated to eliminate approximately 4.5 million units of plastic, aligning with M&S' Plan A commitment to remove 1 billion units of plastic packaging by 2027 on their journey to net zero by 2040.

M&S continues its dedication to reducing plastic waste, building on the success of launching 100% recyclable takeaway coffee cups in the paper waste stream last year. The company achieved its target to remove 75 million units four months ahead of schedule.

Lucinda Langton, Head of Sustainability at M&S Food commented: “Our sandwiches and toasties in M&S Cafés are particularly popular options as customers look to sit down and relax when shopping with us. With a brand-new menu for 2024, came an opportunity to innovate in our packaging - removing and reducing unnecessary plastic, to lower our impact on the planet. We know plastic is an issue our customers care deeply about and this small change to packaging in our Café’s - with no compromise on quality or taste - will make a big impact on our Plan A roadmap to net zero.”

In addition to this packaging innovation, M&S introduces its 2024 Café menu featuring a variety of delectable and innovative choices, including more vegan and gluten-free options. The menu showcases items like the Gluten-Free Tomato, Mozzarella & Basil Pesto Toastie, the Very Veggie Vegan Toastie, the Vegan Avocado & Rainbow Veg Sandwich, and the High Protein Maple Pancake Stack for health-conscious customers.
