Nestlé Purina unveils 100% recycled plastic packaging for Friskies cat treats

Nestlé Purina unveils recycled plastic packaging for Friskies cat treats
Sustainability

Nestlé Purina PetCare has partnered with packaging manufacturer Berry Global to launch new recyclable canisters for its Friskies® Party Mix® cat treats. The updated packaging, set to roll out across the United States this summer, is made entirely from post-consumer recycled PET plastic—excluding the lid and label.

The canisters for the 20oz and 30oz treat ranges are produced using mechanically recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate), offering a more circular solution aimed at reducing reliance on virgin plastics. The development involved cross-functional collaboration between teams at both companies, including packaging, material science, operations, and quality assurance.

The shift to 100% recycled content is expected to eliminate over 500 metric tonnes of virgin plastic annually, delivering a greenhouse gas reduction equivalent to 694 metric tonnes of CO2. The packaging can be widely recycled again after use, supporting closed-loop recycling systems and further reducing plastic waste.

Franco Ignelzi, Expert Packaging at Nestlé Purina, said: We believe future generations of people and pets deserve safe and healthy spaces to roam and play. That vision includes a future where none of our product packaging ends up in a landfill and where our packaging is not only recyclable but incorporates recycled content. This project is an important step toward that vision.

Production of the new canisters takes place at one of Berry’s Safe Quality Food (SQF) certified facilities, using food-grade recycled resin sourced from curbside recycling streams. The partnership aligns with both companies’ broader sustainability commitments, combining technical innovation with practical environmental benefits.
