Mars introduces 100percent recycled plastic pantry jars for iconic brands
Sustainability

Berry Global has partnered with Mars, a leading confectionery brand, to transition its pantry jars for M&M’S®, SKITTLES®, and STARBURST® to packaging made entirely from recycled plastic, excluding the jar lids. This initiative builds on a previous launch in 2022, where the jars contained 15% recycled plastic, and marks a further step in the companies’ shared commitment to increasing the use of recycled materials in packaging. The updated jars are now being introduced nationwide.

Available in three sizes—60, 81, and 87 ounces—the jars are designed to be widely recyclable. The shift to 100% recycled plastic utilises mechanically processed recycled content, preventing the use of more than 1,300 metric tonnes of virgin plastic each year, a weight comparable to approximately 238 African elephants.

The packaging is made using post-consumer resin, derived from plastics collected through consumer recycling streams. This approach contributes to reducing plastic waste in landfills, decreasing reliance on virgin plastic, and lowering emissions while promoting a circular economy. Consumers can further support this cycle by placing empty jars, with their lids attached, into recycling bins, enabling the material to be repurposed for new products.

Berry Global manufactures the square-shaped, easy-grip jars at its facility, utilising certified food-grade mechanically recycled resin sourced from curbside collections. By applying its expertise in material science, Berry has worked alongside Mars to develop this solution, aligning with both companies’ sustainability objectives while maintaining product integrity.

Peter Goshorn, Vice President of Food, Beverage & Spirits for Berry Global’s Consumer Packaging North America Division, said: As companies across the globe commit to transitioning to a circular economy, the ability to deliver products made with recycled materials at scale is crucial. That’s why we’re collaborating with leading brands, like Mars, to significantly increase the use of recycled content to drive responsible business growth without compromising performance or aesthetics.

Mars continues to refine its packaging strategy as part of its Sustainable Packaging Plan, focusing on reducing plastic use and ensuring packaging is designed to be recyclable, reusable, or compostable. The collaboration between Mars and Berry dates back to 2017 and remains a key element in driving innovation in sustainable packaging solutions.
