McDonald's Finland introduces fibre-based lids ahead of schedule
Sustainability
McDonald's Finland has begun replacing plastic lids on its beverages with fibre-based alternatives, continuing its efforts to reduce plastic use across its restaurants.
By 2025, all McDonald's locations in Finland will transition to the new fibre lids for both hot and cold drinks. This change aligns with the company’s global strategy to phase out fossil-based plastics, with full implementation expected by the end of next year.
The switch to fibre lids is expected to lower carbon emissions, as they have a smaller environmental footprint compared to plastic. By introducing these lids, McDonald's Finland aims to reduce plastic consumption by 59,000 kg by the end of 2025.
The new lids are produced by Finnish packaging manufacturer Huhtamäki Oy and feature a patented click-fit design to ensure a secure seal. Like Huhtamäki’s other fibre-based packaging, the lids are home compostable and recyclable.
Olli Johansson , CEO of McDonald's Finland, said: McDonald's goal is for all packaging to come from renewable, recycled and certified materials before the end of 2025.
McDonald's Finland already sources fibre packaging materials from either recycled fibre or certified forests, and all sales packaging used in the country is recyclable.
