Huhtamaki, a provider of foodservice packaging solutions, has partnered with Hesburger, a Finland-based quick service restaurant chain, to introduce a new fibre-based lid solution for beverage applications as part of an ongoing collaboration between the two companies.

The development marks a transition by Hesburger towards customised lids manufactured from fibre, designed for use with both hot and cold drinks. The move is intended to combine functional performance with more sustainable material choices in foodservice packaging.

The lids are produced from renewable, plant-based fibres at Huhtamaki’s foodservice facility in Alf, Germany. The design has been developed to support usability across a range of beverage types, with a focus on drinking comfort and consistent performance in everyday use.

Sustainability considerations have been central to the project. The fibre lids are described as compostable and recyclable, and are manufactured without plastic coatings. According to the companies, replacing plastic lids with fibre alternatives is expected to reduce Hesburger’s plastic usage by approximately 41,000kg annually.

The development work with Hesburger has been both smooth and insightful, supporting the sustainability goals of both organizations. This collaboration is a strong reflection of our valued partnership with Hesburger.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts within the foodservice sector to explore alternative materials and reduce reliance on conventional plastics in packaging applications.
