Allianz Stadium trials rugby ball-inspired plastic-free drinks carrier

Sustainability
Allianz Stadium, the official home of England Rugby, has piloted a new plastic-free drinks carrier during the England XV v France XV match held on 21 June 2025. The initiative is believed to be a UK first, supporting the stadium’s ongoing commitment to improving environmental sustainability.
The innovative carrier, designed to resemble a rugby ball, was developed by sustainable packaging company Notpla in partnership with the stadium’s catering and operations teams. Notpla, known for its seaweed-based, home-compostable packaging, collaborated closely with Levy, the stadium’s catering provider, to ensure the product met the specific needs of high-volume matchday service.

Key features of the design include ease of stacking, quick assembly, and environmentally friendly disposal. Made entirely from natural materials, the carrier biodegrades without leaving harmful residue—much like fruit peel.
This latest development is part of Allianz Stadium’s wider sustainability agenda and builds on previous trials, including the UK’s first use of seaweed-based chip forks during the 2024 Guinness Six Nations.
Gary Cargill, Director of Catering Services, Twickenham Experience Limited commented: We're proud to work with innovators like Notpla to deliver practical, visible steps towards a more sustainable matchday and event experience. This new drinks carrier is just one more example of how these changes, delivered at scale, can make a big difference for our fans and the planet.
The drinks carrier is now in active use, with further eco-friendly packaging solutions expected to be introduced at the venue as part of its ongoing environmental strategy.
