Inspiring the next generation

At Lyte Packaging, we’re passionate about shaping a more sustainable future and that starts with inspiring the next generation. Recently, our team visited a local primary school to talk to a group of enthusiastic Year 5 students about all things sustainable packaging. Prompted by their class project to design a recyclable lunch box, we were thrilled to help them explore how real packaging can make a positive impact.

Where does packaging come from?

Our Marketing Manager, Claire, led the session, sparking curiosity and plenty of brilliant questions from the students. Starting with the basics, Claire introduced different types of packaging from folding cartons to rigid boxes, explaining how water-based varnishes and glues help us achieve high-quality finishes while keeping materials fully recyclable. The students were surprised by how smooth and premium sustainable packaging can feel!

We then explored how our paper and board materials come from sustainably managed forests, and how they are vital for protecting wildlife and maintaining natural resources for the future.

A sprinkle of creativity

To show how important creativity is in what we do, Claire shared some of our imaginative packaging designs, including a dolls house style advent calendar, illustrating how packaging can be reused and repurposed in numerous ways.

Composting the myth

One of the highlights of the session was showcasing the innovative materials used in packaging, including boxes made from seaweed and tubes fabricated from wood shavings and natural resin. The class couldn’t believe that something that looked like plastic could actually be fully compostable! Continuing on that theme, we discussed compostable toothpaste sachets that can break down in their home compost heap.

Smart packaging

The class had been learning about automation which lead onto how the future of packaging will be smarter. Claire demonstrated the NFC (Near Field Communication) technology in our packaging, scanning a box to reveal product information, and how similar technology is being used in smart checkouts, something the children will experience more regularly in future.

Curious minds

The students were full of insightful questions about recycling, carbon footprints, and global shipping, a true sign of how engaged and environmentally aware young people are today.

They left with new knowledge, fresh inspiration, and, we hope, a lifelong curiosity about sustainable design.
