Belgium enforces stricter packaging waste regulations for businesses
Business
Belgium has introduced stricter packaging waste regulations, requiring businesses to comply with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules aimed at reducing environmental impact. The updated measures are part of the country's efforts to promote sustainability and align with European Union directives.
Under the revised regulations, companies selling over 300 tonnes of packaging or 100 tonnes of packaged goods annually must submit detailed declarations outlining the types and volumes of materials used. These reports are intended to improve transparency and ensure that businesses contribute to recycling and waste reduction targets. Non-compliance may result in significant penalties.
The EPR framework, which was first implemented in Belgium in 1997, obligates producers and importers to take responsibility for the full lifecycle of their packaging, including its collection, recycling, and disposal. By enforcing these rules, Belgium aims to drive innovation in eco-friendly packaging and strengthen its commitment to a circular economy.
The country’s stricter policies reflect its role as a leader in sustainable waste management, ensuring businesses play an active part in reducing packaging waste and supporting national recycling goals.
