Co-op has begun rolling out NaviLens technology across selected own-label paper products, introducing accessible packaging designed to help visually impaired customers identify products and access information more independently.

The technology uses high-contrast codes printed directly onto product packaging, which can be detected using the free NaviLens smartphone app. Unlike conventional QR codes, the codes can be scanned from greater distances and wider angles, reducing the need for users to locate them precisely before scanning.

Once detected, the app provides spoken product information, including the product name, description and other relevant details.

The first Co-op own-brand products to feature the technology include Single Roll Kitchen Towel, Kitchen Towel (4 Pack), Toilet Tissue (4 Pack) and Toilet Tissue (24 Pack). The products are manufactured in partnership with hygiene paper producer WEPA.

This initiative is an important step in paving the way for future innovation in grocery retail, demonstrating how technology can be used to create a more inclusive shopping environment and improved experience for blind and visually impaired customers.

Janet Lawrence, Co-op Technical Manager.

NaviLens has previously been adopted in sectors including public transport and retail, with Co-op's latest rollout representing a further application of the technology within grocery packaging.

The retailer said the first four products are now available in stores, with plans to extend NaviLens across its own-brand paper range as part of a phased rollout.
