Co-op trials in-store collection for coffee pod recycling

Co op trials in store collection for coffee pod recycling
Sustainability

Co-op has launched a six-month in-store recycling trial with Podback, marking what is reported to be the first initiative of its kind among UK convenience retailers. The scheme aims to give shoppers an easier way to return used coffee pods for recycling.

Under the pilot, Podback-branded collection units have been installed in 30 Co-op stores across southwest England, as well as in three of the retailer’s designated sustainability showcase stores in Leeds, Soham and Northampton. Customers can check participating locations through Podback’s online Recycle Checker, and Podback recycling bags can be ordered via its website or through partner coffee brands.

Shoppers fill the bags with used pods and deposit them at the new in-store drop-off points. Podback then collects the bags for recycling. The programme accepts both aluminium and plastic coffee pods from more than 30 member brands. According to Podback, all materials are processed in the UK: Coffee grounds are converted into renewable energy and soil improver, while recycled aluminium and plastic are used in applications such as beverage cans, construction materials and outdoor furniture.

Rick Hindley, Executive Director at Podback said: We’re thrilled to be partnering with The Co-op on this trial. Our mission is to give lovers of pod coffee simple and convenient ways to recycle, and Podback customers throughout the UK have responded positively to the introduction of drop-off points in retail locations because it’s easy to combine recycling with their regular routines. This is another exciting step towards expanding our nationwide recycling network, and we look forward to seeing how this new service develops over the coming months.
Scott McHarg, Head of Co-op & Property Sustainability, said: We’re delighted to be partnering with Podback. Recycling is a topic that our member-owners are extremely passionate about and this new trial is another way we can make it easier for our customers to do the right thing for the planet when shopping in our stores

Co-op joins a growing list of retailers supporting Podback’s nationwide recycling network, which now spans over 1,100 retail drop-off points and around 260 local authority household recycling centres across the country.
