Vital Proteins transitions to paper based canisters for collagen peptides
Sustainability

Vital Proteins, a brand under Nestlé Health Science and known for its collagen-based wellness products, is transitioning its top-selling collagen peptides from plastic containers to an 80% paperboard canister.

This move marks the first significant packaging overhaul in its more than 10-year history and is a first for the category. The move aligns with growing consumer demand for sustainable packaging, with nearly 80% of North American consumers expressing a preference for products with sustainability credentials.

The new canisters are made from fibres sourced from responsibly managed Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC ®)-certified forests, which will reduce plastic usage by over 90% across all of Vital Proteins’ canister products—equating to approximately 1,800 metric tons or nearly 4 million pounds of plastic. These paper-based tubs are designed to be curbside recyclable, and consumers are encouraged to verify recycling options with their local municipalities. The new packaging also features How2Recycle instructions for easy reference.

The transition to the paper-based canisters follows three years of research and development. Vital Proteins focused on ensuring that the new packaging maintained the same level of quality as the product inside. The canisters include a patented pull-tab lid for easy access, replacing the need for twisting, and have undergone extensive testing to ensure they maintain product freshness and can withstand everyday use without leaks or spills.

Jill Abbott, General Manager at Vital Proteins, said: As pioneers in the collagen category, we feel a responsibility to lead when it comes to investing in sustainability initiatives, which includes innovating our packaging and reducing our plastic footprint. With wellness at the core of our brand, we care about making a positive impact on both our consumers and the planet through all that we do. The road to get here wasn't always easy, but we're incredibly proud to take this meaningful next step in our journey toward a more responsible future as we introduce our new paper-based canister – and to be the first collagen brand to do it.

Additionally, Vital Proteins has already started phasing out plastic scoops from its canisters and aims to completely eliminate them across its entire product range by the end of 2025.
