Sirane’s paper-recyclable fruit absorbent pad has received a world’s first approval from OPRL for recycling.

The Earthpad, a paper-recyclable absorbent pad designed for fruit, has been granted approval for recycling by OPRL, making it the world’s first of its kind.

The Earthpad comprises a cellulose absorbent material with a paper outer layer, which has been applied using barrier coatings. The pads are available in four different colours, including black, white, red, and brown kraft. In addition to regular absorbent pads, cushioned paper-based absorbent pads called Earthpad Soft-Hold are available for protecting delicate fruits.

Sirane, a packaging development-to-manufacturing company that specialises in absorbency, board, and flexible packaging, has completed independent testing for recyclability and received further endorsement from the UK Recycling Association. The company has three sites in the UK, with additional manufacturing facilities in the Czech Republic, Mexico, and the US.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: "Sirane has been known for years now as the experts in absorbency, and innovation. This product combines the two. We're not aware of any other absorbent pad on the market anywhere in the world that has been approved for recycling, so this is a great step forward. A lot of fruit is sold in punnets/trays with an absorbent pad, which helps keep the fruit fresher for longer, using EarthPad, the pad insert is now eco-friendly."
