Plastics Recyclers Europe calls for genuine plastic circularity in EU
Sustainability
Plastics Recyclers Europe urges the EU to commit to genuine plastic circularity, emphasising competitiveness and innovation within the industry.
With a critical juncture ahead during the 2024-2029 term, the EU must align with Green Deal objectives, focusing on overcoming challenges in collection, design for recycling, and uptake.
Transparent rules, realistic recycling targets, and combatting greenwashing are imperative, including promoting transparency and establishing a level playing field for all products.
Plastics Recyclers Europe proposes five priorities to accelerate the transition towards circular plastics, ensuring fair competition, sustainable investments, and fostering innovation in the EU plastics industry. The implementation of reliable verification and certification systems is crucial for traceability across the value chain.
Ton Emans, Plastics Recyclers Europe’s President, said: Plastics recycling has proved itself as one of the vital components of a circular economy in Europe. To unlock its full potential, necessary incentives, targeting the entire value chain must be set to drive investments towards EU recycling capacities and technological developments.
Ultimately, science-based, data-driven policies are vital for a successful transition, contributing to a circular, carbon-neutral economy in line with the EU's Green Deal.
