Plastic and aluminium-free brewing: Keurig Dr Pepper introduces eco-friendly coffee pods

Sustainability

Keurig Dr Pepper is launching a bold innovation agenda for its Keurig® single-serve brewing system, introducing a range of new products and technologies to cater to the evolving preferences of coffee enthusiasts.

At the heart of this vision is the introduction of K-Rounds™ plastic-free pods, a groundbreaking solution for single-serve coffee. These pods are crafted from carefully roasted coffee beans, ground, pressed, and encased in a unique plant-based coating, preserving the coffee's flavour and aroma while eliminating the need for plastic or aluminium. Compatible with the new Keurig Alta™ brewer, the K-Rounds pods enable consumers to create a variety of hot and cold barista-style beverages effortlessly, from bold espressos to rich, aromatic coffees and refreshing cold brews.

To ensure the system meets consumer expectations, Keurig is inviting feedback through various beta testing phases, with the first phase scheduled for fall 2024. Leveraging insights from these trials and collaborating closely with retailers and coffee brand partners, Keurig aims to refine and optimise the system before its wider release.

The innovative design of K-Rounds enables brewing at both high and low pressures, catering to various coffee preferences without the need for costly coffeehouse visits. Available in different sizes for specific beverages, each K-Rounds pod is equipped with a unique code that the Keurig Alta brewer reads automatically, adjusting the pressure and extraction profile for optimal flavour and richness. After use, K-Rounds pods can be disposed of like coffee grounds and are expected to be certified compostable.

Chairman and CEO Bob Gamgort said: Thirty years ago, Keurig changed the way consumers brewed coffee, with the introduction of the K-Cup pod single serve coffee system. Today, we are applying all our expertise to create a revolutionary new system that will redefine how consumers will brew coffee for decades to come. Our ambitious agenda reflects our commitment to providing variety, quality, value, and sustainability to the 45 million North American coffee consumers who currently use Keurig brewers and the millions of potential new households who will discover the benefits of a perfect cup of coffee prepared effortlessly in their home.

In addition to K-Rounds pods, the new Keurig Alta brewer offers compatibility with existing K-Cup® pods, providing users with access to over 500 varieties offered by the Keurig family of brands.
