Ontario welcomes Nespresso's Green Bag recycling programme

Sustainability

Nespresso Canada, in partnership with Circular Materials, has launched the Green Bag Recycling Programme in Ontario, marking a notable advancement in Nespresso's recycling efforts.

Ontario is now the sixth province to participate in this programme, with the City of London being the first municipality in the province to adopt the initiative. This programme simplifies the recycling of Nespresso capsules by allowing residents to place used aluminium capsules in a green bag and dispose of it in their home recycling bin. Nestlé Canada, a founding member of Circular Materials, played a crucial role in implementing this programme in London.

Under the Green Bag programme, the collected bags are sent to Miller Waste Systems in London, a sorting centre and Circular Materials collection partner. From there, they are forwarded to a Nespresso recycling partner where the capsules are processed to separate the coffee grounds from the aluminium. The aluminium is recycled, while the coffee grounds are converted into high-quality compost. This programme is designed to be cost-free for both consumers and municipalities.

Previously, Nespresso Club members in London used a Red Bag system, requiring them to drop off used capsules at Canada Post mailboxes or post offices. The new Green Bag programme allows members to simply place the green bags in their blue recycling bins at home. Capsules can still be dropped off at Nespresso stores and designated drop-off points, but the Green Bag initiative offers a more convenient recycling option for London residents.

Carlos Oyanguren, President of Nespresso Canada, said: Implementing the Green Bag program in Ontario has been a priority for Nespresso for years now – we are proud that this additional solution is brought to London, Ontario. Nespresso has played a key role in reducing residual materials in Canada by implementing innovative recycling solutions for over a decade now. We are confident that this collaboration with Circular Materials in Ontario will help achieve our ambitious recycling targets and we look forward to expanding this solution to other municipalities.
