Akorn Technology has introduced a new plant-based coating for cucumbers and bell peppers, designed as an alternative to single-use plastic wraps.

The edible coating, known as Akorn Natural Advantage, creates an invisible barrier on the surface of the produce which mimics the protective role of plastic film. The company says the solution can help cucumbers maintain their colour, texture and freshness while removing the need for conventional plastic wrapping.

According to Akorn, plastic-wrapped cucumbers often show yellowing due to the build-up of ethylene inside the packaging. By contrast, cucumbers treated with the coating are claimed to remain firm and retain their deep green appearance, helping to extend shelf life and improve quality.

The technology is based on Akorn’s patented edible coatings, which are produced using upcycled, non-GMO plant materials. The coatings are fully compostable and aim to offer retailers and consumers a sustainable packaging alternative that reduces plastic waste while preserving food quality.

Xander Shapiro, COO and co-founder of Akorn, said: Other companies have gone to extremes to find solutions, many of which are simply unpalatable to the average consumer and therefore retailer. Akorn Natural Advantage for cucumbers and peppers is highly effective in retaining product crispness and colour, and all without gross ingredients that fly in the face of consumer preferences.

Akorn says the solution requires only minor adjustments to existing processes for implementation. The company also highlighted that plastic packaging on fresh produce can contribute to food waste by accelerating spoilage and encouraging bulk purchasing, whereas its coating is intended to keep items fresher for longer.

The launch forms part of Akorn’s wider efforts to provide bio-based packaging innovations to markets in the US, Europe and internationally.
