Nestlé introduces 'Self-Packing Cheese' with biodegradable whey-based packaging
Sustainability
Nestlé Central America, in partnership with Ogilvy Colombia, has unveiled an innovative packaging solution termed "Self-Packing Cheese." This development utilises cheese whey, a byproduct of cheese production, to create biodegradable packaging material, thereby reducing reliance on traditional plastic packaging.
The process involves converting whey into polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), a biopolymer that possesses properties similar to conventional plastics but is fully biodegradable. This packaging solution aligns with food safety standards and maintains the quality and freshness of the cheese product.

Currently, this packaging is being tested with Nestlé's ¡Qué Rico! cheese products distributed in Panama, with a production target of 5,500 tons.
The initiative represents a step towards sustainable packaging practices and reflects Nestlé's commitment to environmental responsibility.
