Fibre based snus can concept targets smokeless tobacco packaging
Sustainability

PulPac, Future Materials Sweden and Yoik AB have collaborated on the development of a fibre-based snus can concept for Yoik’s Helwit brand, using PulPac’s Dry Molded Fiber technology.

The project aims to explore the use of moulded fibre packaging within the smokeless tobacco category, which typically requires high-volume, rigid packaging formats with tight dimensional tolerances. According to the companies, the material has been designed to deliver consistent structural performance while meeting functional and commercial requirements for the segment.

As part of the collaboration, Future Materials Sweden has also signed a licensing agreement with PulPac to commercialise products based on the Dry Molded Fiber technology.

The fibre-based snus can has been designed to provide dimensional accuracy, reliable fit and a premium appearance. The format has also been engineered to withstand repeated opening and closing while protecting the product and maintaining surface quality.

The packaging concept is currently undergoing a structured validation process. Planned next steps include performance testing and trials within Yoik’s filling line environment to assess compatibility with production operations.

We have presented the concept to selected customers, and the response confirms clear market demand. Interest from both Swedish and U.S. actors shows that the volume potential is substantial. From the outset, we have focused on building a commercially viable solution, and the cost position supports industrial adoption. Together with PulPac, our ambition is to scale this concept globally.

Morgan Svensson, Founder of Future Materials Sweden.

Further design refinements are expected as the development progresses, with the partners also exploring industrialisation and scale-up strategies. This includes production planning and tooling optimisation to support potential large-scale manufacturing once testing milestones have been completed.
