Greiner Packaging's home-compostable capsule packaging receives TÜV certification
Supplier News
Greiner Packaging, a company that has been producing packaging solutions for capsules for years, has developed a compostable polymer solution to address the environmental impact of capsules made from aluminium or plastic.
This solution is suitable for various packaging applications, such as coffee, tea, and baby food, and can be easily disposed of in a consumer's backyard composter. TÜV Austria Belgium NV has recently certified the capsules, confirming their compliance with the OK Home Compost standards.
While capsules have received criticism for their waste production, they are actually a more environmentally friendly form of packaging than perceived. Capsules provide excellent protection to the product, preventing spoilage and waste. The precise measurement of coffee inside the capsule also prevents overuse, ensuring that consumers only use the right amount for one cup. However, used capsules are still discarded, and Greiner Packaging's solution aims to reduce this waste by providing a compostable alternative.
To be TÜV-certified, the capsules must break down within 26 weeks. Our home-compostable capsules biodegraded within just 15 weeks. We are delighted to have successfully obtained certification, as it means we can now offer fully sustainable capsule packaging to our customers and the consumers they serve. – Taner Ertan, global business development manager at Greiner Packaging
