US prison training programme opens doors to careers in packaging
Business
JBM Packaging, a provider of eco-friendly paper packaging and contract packaging services, has introduced a new prison-based training programme aimed at preparing individuals for employment following their release. Developed in partnership with Ohio Penal Industries (OPI), the initiative is based at London Correctional Institution (LoCI) in London, Ohio.
The training forms part of JBM’s Fair Chance Program and offers participants nearing the end of their sentences hands-on experience operating advanced manufacturing equipment, with a focus on machine adjuster roles. Trainees are paid industry-competitive wages, making JBM the first of OPI’s 13 private-sector partners in Ohio to offer higher wages for training rather than production output.

The scheme is designed to equip participants with practical skills and a clear employment pathway post-release. Alongside technical training, individuals are introduced to JBM’s Better Lives programme, which provides life coaching, financial literacy education, and post-release support services.
Marcus Sheanshang, President & CEO of JBM Packaging, said: We’ve seen the challenges individuals face after incarceration firsthand. This training not only gives people the foundational skills they need to build a successful career, it also provides financial resources and job security to help them get back on their feet and make that transition just a little bit less stressful.
The programme has already seen its first participant successfully graduate, with two others currently progressing through the training. Upon release, participants have the opportunity to transition directly into employment with JBM.
Ann King, OPI Chief, said: JBM is setting a powerful example of how private partnerships can prepare OPI’s incarcerated workforce for their future. This program provides training, employment, and meaningful wages which provides financial independence for an opportunity to successfully transition to life after release.
Over the past seven years, JBM’s wider Fair Chance Program has employed more than 125 formerly incarcerated individuals, supporting efforts to reduce recidivism and build a stronger, more inclusive workforce.
