Bubbies Ice Cream, a leading mochi ice cream brand in the natural channel, has announced the launch of certified home-compostable packaging as part of its ongoing sustainability efforts. Timed to coincide with Earth Month, the brand is replacing its internal plastic clamshell packaging with new paper pulp trays designed to reduce environmental impact.

Developed in partnership with Earthcycle, the newly introduced inner trays are certified for home compostability and are designed to biodegrade within six months in appropriate conditions. This change is expected to prevent approximately 310 tonnes of plastic waste from entering landfill sites each year, aligning with the brand’s wider environmental objectives.

Research by Diversitech Global highlights that 75% of consumers consider sustainability an important factor when making purchasing decisions, underlining the significance of this packaging transition.

Following extensive testing, Bubbies confirmed that the new packaging offers comparable functionality to its previous plastic trays while achieving a 94% reduction in plastic usage. The switch is estimated to eliminate the annual use of around 282 tonnes of plastic – equivalent to approximately 31.2 million water bottles – save 21.7 million kBtu of energy (enough to power over 136 homes in the United States), and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 725 tonnes, comparable to the emissions of more than 150 cars.

Katie Cline, Vice President of Marketing at Bubbies Ice Cream, said: Since day one, Bubbies has been committed to sharing its ice cream creations in an ethical and environmentally conscious way that benefits both our customers and the planet. Now that our transition from plastic to paper pulp trays is complete, we encourage consumers to join the movement this Earth Month by composting their trays at home and making mindful choices that contribute to a cleaner, greener future.

The new paper pulp trays are now available across a range of U.S. retailers, including selected Whole Foods Market, Publix, Sprouts Farmers Market, Safeway, H-E-B, and Gelson’s Market locations, as well as through the brand’s website.
